Installation Guidance
Cathedral ceiling insulation at R-30 in Zone 3 requires careful planning because the available depth is limited by the rafter size. Standard rafter cavities can accommodate R-30 with careful material selection. Dense-pack cellulose or closed-cell spray foam in the rafter cavity is effective. For vented cathedral ceiling assemblies, maintain at least a 1-inch continuous air space between the insulation and the roof sheathing by installing rigid ventilation baffles in every rafter bay. This ventilation channel runs from the soffit to the ridge, allowing moisture to escape and preventing ice dam formation in cold climates. For unvented assemblies, the IRC requires that either the entire R-value be provided by air-impermeable insulation (spray foam), or a specific ratio of air-impermeable to air-permeable insulation be maintained to prevent condensation on the roof sheathing.
